The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red’ alert for very heavy rain today over Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh, prompting the government in the hill state to stop pilgrims on the Char Dham yatra route, halting them at various points and advising them not to proceed further till the weather improves. Most educational institutions across Uttarakhand will remain closed today while there will be a ban on trekking, mountaineering, and camping activities in the high altitude areas of the state till Tuesday as a precautionary measure in view of the heavy rain alert issued by the Met department.
