Puducherry Police grill Hyderabad girls for ‘inappropriate’ dressing
A group of girls from Hyderabad who went to Puducherry for a vacation have complained about an alleged incident of moral policing by two cops for dressing “inappropriately.”
Puducherry Police was seen grilling Hyderabad girls for ‘inappropriate’ dressing in an incident of moral policing.
A young techie working in Hyderabad has complained about an alleged incident of moral policing during her Puducherry visit.
A group of techies, including Pranita, was in Puducherry (earlier Pondicherry) for a vacation. She alleged that on Saturday, she and her friends were heckled by the local police.
Pranita alleged that she got a ‘dressing lesson’ from the police as to how to dress.
She and her friends were out casually taking pictures at a famous seaside tourist destination when cops obstructed the group near French Colony for dressing “inappropriately”.
She alleged that one of the policemen also questioned her character.
‘Pondicherry is a tourist place where a lot of foreigners come as well. I asked the police if they stopped foreigners as well, but they didn’t answer,’ she said. The cop who objected to the dressing of girls, told them that ‘’This kind of clothing is not allowed.’’
The group recorded the video which shows two cops on a bike heckling the girls.
“He also threatened us to take us to the police station, to which we obliged but only if we were told that we were wrong. He was not willing to do that and instead blamed us and gave a moral science lecture on how to dress up “decently”. We tried to put out a logic and also explain our rights but he clearly wan’t listening,” Pranita said in a video.
Pranita claimed that both the policemen first followed them for about 15 minutes and later they stopped the group and asked one of her friends’ mobile number and other details. When she intervened and asked for an explanation, she faced comments on her dress.
Later, the cops left the spot after realising that the group is filming the incident on the phone.
