BJP’s Annamalai asks Stalin why lyricist Vairamuthu hasn’t been booked despite several MeToo claims
Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has asked whether lyricist Vairamuthu, accused of sexual harassment by several women five years ago, has yet been booked, even as Chief Minister M K Stalin supported the wrestlers protesting against a sexual harassment-accused BJP MP, and singer Chinmayi Sripaada questioned the inaction on her complaint against the latter.
‘He (Stalin) has put a meaningless tweet saying that Sengol (sacred sceptre) is bent on day one so I will educate the chief minister with respect to the wrestler issue that is happening in Delhi. The person who is close to our chief minister, literally his right-hand-man, is Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu. There are 19 sexual harassment complaints against Vairamuthu including (of) singer Chinmayi. I am asking the CM, have you filed an FIR against Vairamuthu? Have you called him for questioning?’ Annamalai told the ANI news agency on Monday.
He was referring to the DMK leaders’ tweet on Sunday, which read, ‘The female wrestlers are still protesting in the capital. During the inauguration of the new parliament, the wrestlers were dragged from the protest and arrested and it is condemnable. This just shows that the Sengol (sacred sceptre) is bent on the first day itself.’

Stalin, who said the BJP was yet to take action against its MP, Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan, even though the wrestlers had been protesting for months seeking his arrest. The DMK leader also condemned the protesting wrestlers’ arrest by Delhi Police.
Annamalai rejected the claim that there was no democracy stating that the wrestlers were allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar, given the opportunity to conduct press meets to level allegations. He claimed that police acted as per the law, only when they decided to carry out a march without permission.
‘The country cannot focus on one person, the country has to focus on the collective public so that is how the Delhi Police have taken action. When the resistance happens, the police will use their power to secure you and put you into preventive arrest so that the situation doesn’t go out of hand,’ he added.
‘This country runs on a certain law of the land. This is not a Kangaroo republic. Law cannot function like that. The matter has gone to the Supreme Court and the High Court. Delhi Police are also investigating. There is a process of investigation. If at all he is proven guilty, 100 per cent the government is going to take action against him. In this case, you just made an allegation and you want the whole country to take the truth at its face value and it cannot happen. Simply because you are famous, there is no separate law for you. Everyone has to go through the same process,’ he added.
Annamalai also claimed that the process of law was set in motion promptly after the wrestlers levelled the allegations against the BJP MP. Delhi Police, however, registered two FIRs against Bhushan only after the matter reached the Supreme Court.
